The Nikon D90 is undoubtedly one of the easiest cameras to operate, if you have that a basic knowledge of using a decent point-and-shoot camera. All the functions of the camera such as ISO, white balance, exposure metering and focusing modes can be accessed by holding down the respective buttons and rotating the jog dial. Shutter speed and aperture size have dedicated dials. It’s very difficult to criticise the D90 on quality as well. The 12.3-MP CMOS sensor does its job well. Photos turn out crisp across the entire aperture range. The lens isn’t made for macro photography, so you’ll have difficulty with up-close shots. Mind you, great close-ups can be shot by moving back and zooming into the target. Good depth of field can be achieved easily too. The flash is powerful and good enough for indoor photography every now and then. The Auto mode works well along with the autofocus feature. Focusing is instantaneous and there is no delay whatsoever.
The D90 boasts a powerful 12.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, a fantastic Expeed image processor and an amazing sensitivity of up to ISO 6400. You’ll be able to take great photos in low lighting conditions without any loss in resolution, and view what you’re shooting before and after taking the photo on its easy-to-read, 3″ LCD screen. The Live View mode means you can focus in on your scene directly on the screen, while scene and face recognition technologies ensure you never miss a thing. The D90 is also equipped with a high definition video mode, which is rare for a product in this category, as well as a host of image editing functions so you can add your own personal stamp to all your creations. Like all the cameras in its manufacturer’s product catalogue, the Nikon D90 has a sturdy, lightweight aluminium and plastic casing, in addition to a burst mode of 4.5 frames per second! The D90is supplied here with a compact 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR lens with a built-in VR stabiliser that compensates for low aperture, reducing the risk of blur. Plus, the range of this lens – equivalent to 27-157.5mm on traditional cameras – covers a wider area to shoot sweeping landscapes, sporting events and documentaries. This lens even includes an aspheric lens with an ED coating and an SWM autofocus for improved focusing and image reproduction. The Nikon D90 was crowned “Best Digital SLR Advanced Camera 2009″ at the TIPA Awards.
As expected from any D-SLR, the manual mode gives you total control of the camera. You won’t be disappointed with the D90, if you like to select a scenario preset either, a dial for doing that is present. Another new feature hardly ever seen on D-SLRs is video recording. The D90 can capture up to 1280×720 resolution videos at 24 frames per second. What makes it even more special is that you can zoom and focus manually while shooting videos. The video quality is great and the frame rate quite stable but you will need to buy a fast SD/SDHC card for it.
